First Name: William
Ship: Henry Tanner 1834
Date: 20 October 1835
Place: Newcastle
Source: Newcastle Court of Petty Sessions, Bench Books, 1833-1836 (Ancestry)
Details: William Greaves, assigned servant to A.W. Scott, charged with insolence to his overseer...John Jones, overseer to A.W. Scott, testified....on Saturday morning last the prisoner came over to the north shore from Newcastle after having been punished. He went into breakfast with same time with the other men. After the usual time, I called all the men to work. The prisoner did not come. I then went to the hut and told him the time allowed was expired. He said he had no breakfast. I told him he had had time and he must come to work. He then came out and used some insolence saying he would report me to Mr. Scott. I told him not to make a scoundrel of himself in reporting me to Mr. Scott. He went into the building and said in a loud voice, damn you, you are as much beneath me as the dirt under my feet. When I found that the prisoner had not had his breakfast I asked him to go and get some although he had had time before. He replied he would not but would take me to court. I do not remember his giving me any reasons for not having his breakfast. In defence William Greaves denied using any insolence but acknowledges that his overseer offered extra time for breakfast. Guilty. Sentenced to 50 lashes
